Traffic-rated electrical boxes are essential components in areas with frequent pedestrian and vehicle traffic. If you require a traffic-rated electrical pull box for these applications, Hope Electrical Products Co., Inc. carries compliant pull boxes and electrical boxes to meet your application requirements.
What Does “Traffic-Rated” Mean?
If an enclosure is traffic-rated, it falls under a specific tier rating that indicates what weight and type of traffic it can handle. If you wish to install an electrical enclosure in an area with pedestrian or vehicle traffic, you must select the right traffic-rated electrical box with the appropriate tier rating.
Load Classifications and Compliance Specs
A pull box is traffic-rated based on the following tiers and corresponding weight specifications.
Light Duty
Pull boxes in this tier are suitable for environments with pedestrian traffic only. They are capable of design loads of up to 300 pounds per foot but have been tested to 3,000 pounds.
Medium Duty
To qualify as medium-duty electrical boxes, products fall under any of the following three tiers:
- Tier 5. Units in this tier are for sidewalk applications with non-deliberate vehicle traffic, with a design load of 5,000 pounds and a test load of 7,500 pounds.
- Tier 8. These electrical boxes also work in sidewalk areas that might experience non-deliberate vehicle traffic, with an 8,000-pound design load and a 12,000-pound test load.
- Tier 15. This tier covers parking lot, driveway, and off-road applications that may experience non-deliberate heavy vehicle traffic, with design loads of 15,000 pounds and test loads of 22,500 pounds.
Heavy Duty
At this level, Tier 22 applies to enclosures designed for parking lots, driveways, and off-road applications that may be subject to even heavier non-deliberate vehicle traffic. Heavy-duty traffic-rated boxes have a design load of 22,500 pounds and a test load of 33,750 pounds.
AASHTO H-20
For continuous vehicle traffic, enclosures need to have this traffic rating, established by the American Association of State Highway and Traffic Officials (AASHTO). To qualify, H-20 rated electrical enclosures must be suitable for up to Class 8 vehicles, gross vehicle weights of as much as 40,000 pounds, and a 16,000-pound maximum wheel load. The design load at this tier is 16,000 pounds, while the test load is 34,720 pounds.
